Spam’s birthday

Yes, today is the 70th birthday of SPAM, which was introduced to the market on this day in 1937 by the Hormel Foods Corporation. This visionary product spawned the Potted Meat Craze of the late ’30s. Some say that it was indirectly responsible for World War II but officials from Hormel Foods Corporation (now a subsidiary of Lockheed-Martin) deny these rumors.

Growing up in East Africa, my mom still insists that the local grocery store could be depended on for only two items: Mumm’s champagne and Spam.

I wonder if any of the original 1937 Spam is still on a grocery store shelf somewhere?
